tomorrow begins kurban bayram, or eid, here in turkey - the sacrifice holiday. that basically means there will be a lot of dead chickens, sheep and cows everywhere - since people will be purchasing the animals to be slaughtered and given to the poor (here's the wiki link if you want to know more).
for emre this meant toys! it's tradition for children to receive gifts for bayram, and our balkaya family of COURSE did not buck the tradition when we visited babaannem's (emre's great grandmother) house on sunday.
sitting on dede's lap
taking it all in
bring on the bayram loot!
dede putting emre's bayram cash in his pocket
starved for attention, this kid
giving some love to his g'ma, making dede jealous
to us? it means 6 days off - and a trip to ireland! a place i've not been to since i spent a semester in belfast 12 years ago (!). we'll stay in istanbul tonight and fly to dublin first thing in the morning. i can't wait!
