tonight ben & i will go to the ambassador's residence for a july 4th soiree. for us it's more of a work function, as many of our work colleagues will be attending. but apparently it's kind of a big deal- all of the turkish members of parliament have been invited. a friend of ours who works at the embassy has warned us that if we spend too long speaking with the ambassador, it is his job to escort us away. therefore i plan on spending too long with the ambassador-- just to watch our friend sweat! mua ha ha.
friday, we will work. there's nothing celebratory about that.
but come saturday, it's grillin' time! ben spoke with our kapici (building maintenance dude) about grilling, since some turks aren't keen on having bbq's nearby the building. why? i dont know, considerng they LOVE to bbq, anywhere and everywhere, including on the side of the road. but it's probably for the best since we MIGHT be cooking pork products, and the turks ain't so down with that. the kapici was kind enough to let us in on a little secret: his sacred grilling spot. he has a little area in some public land next to our building where he has planted a garden & laid a cement pad for grilling, and he's willing to let us use it. woohoo! we've invited some friends, american & turkish, for a bbq in celebration of july 4th & summatime... now let's just hope we can find a decent grill.
pictures to come!

Nice! sounds like a great weekend ahead. We will do the usual dinner at home (or maybe picnic) and fireworks on the Hudson. Suki & Will might join for it.
Happy 4th!
love,
Sarah
I take it you're feeling better? Dad was a little worried after reading a US DOH description of Swine flu symptoms. Heck, they might be anything!
We are going to the Perkins. They called today. rain, rain, rain!
