last week while we were in istanbul, ben and i picked out 2 kilims to bring home to complete our living room. we've been wanting to purchase a kilim or carpet for some time, and were so glad we made the time to visit a family friend's store in istanbul where we were able to choose from a beautiful selection.
the first kilim is turkish, has lots of earth tones (mainly, orange & brown), and a very unique design which caught our eye immediately. each kilim tells a different story, this one has patterns of 'hands on hips' (which symbolize fertility), and the 'ram's horn,' for protection from the evil eye. plus, it blends nicely with our living room decor!
the second one comes from iran. we both immediately loved the unique border. this one has a comb motif, a protector of birth & marriage from the evil eye, as well as hooks, also for protection from the evil eye.
one other piece we picked up recently here in ankara is a framing of sultan's signatures. we found it in an old map shop & decided it would be perfect over the couch.
so, i think it's safe to say our home is really a 'home' now, with our own collection of treasures found. now to finish the baby's room!

wow, those are beautiful! The whole room looks lovely. I especially love the stories behind the rugs, what a wonderful tradition to add to your home.

The orange Queen Ann-style chairs! You didn't mention those. Just right for grandfather to hold his grandson while reading the NY Times on his iPad.
Oh, and the Kilims are nice, too!
